輝く瞳、躍動する四肢、偉大な勝利のもたらす自由を求める様に延ばされたその首。ドバイミレニアムの記憶が、馬自体の寿命よりも長く残ることは以前から確かなことだったが、日曜夜、早すぎる死がそれを証明するかたちとなってしまった。
全く白点のない鹿毛の体のように純粋な馬だった。神童として期待され、芝、ターフの二つ、そして二つの大陸をまたいでの勝利をあげた馬、母国で神話的な人気を博した馬、馬主シーク・モハメド殿下の夢を体現するために生まれてきた馬だった。
「瞳から心が透けて見える馬だ」シーク・モハメド殿下が、ドバイミレニアムについてこうコメントしたのは１３ヶ月前。この偉大なるアスリートを評するのに、これ以上の言葉はないだろう。
それだけに、その死の不幸さが際立つ。まさかと思われる突然の疝痛での死。一塊の草の中に、そんな不運が潜んでいようとは。（日本の報道では同馬の死因は競走馬の腹痛全体を表す疝痛という言葉が使われている。原文での死因はgrass sickness 。別の解説記事によると、２〜７歳馬に春におこることがある比較的まれな原因不明の病気。自律神経の異常により、呼吸、消化器の運動、唾液の分泌などに支障がおこり、消化不良で腸の手術をすることが多い。極度の鬱状態に陥るのも特徴で、治療は困難。以上の通り、疝痛とgrass sickness は完全に重なる言葉ではない。）
ドバイミレニアムを誰よりも愛していた殿下にとって、今日は心痛と内省のうちに過ぎ去っていくだろう。ドバイミレニアムは自らの牧場で配合した、素晴らしい均整のとれたサラブレッドで、一年をかけて準備した２０００年のドバイワールドカップで期待通りの凱旋を果たした馬なのだから、無理もない。
２０００年のドバイワールドカップは、永遠に忘れられないような凄いレースだった。わがままなドバイミレニアムのエネルギーに、鞍上のフランキー・デットーリ騎手は為す術もない様に思われた。あんなに逃げては余力が残らず、世界の一流馬相手に馬群に沈むだろうという予想を跳ねのけ、見事に勝利を収めたドバイミレニアム。
その後、プリンスオブウエールズステークスで芝に復帰し、ロイヤルアスコットでも堂々とした逃げ切り勝ちをしてのけ、ライバルと思われたアガ・カーン所有のクラシックホースSenderを、レーダーから消えていく小さな点の様に打ち負かした。
ドバイミレニアムは、去年の八月に後脚の骨折をするまで、ダート、芝の両方に（この偉大な業績は、今までに挑戦どころか、その可能性すら考えられたことの無かったものだ）王者として君臨した。
ドバイミレニアムの卓越した能力に異を唱えるものはほとんどいなかった。ブリーダーズカップを勝てなかったのは足の故障のせいで、順調に行っていれば現代サラブレッド史に並ぶもののない偉業を達成していたはずだと関係者は強調する。
アメリカのトップブリーダーたちはその主張に同調していたようで、ニューマーケットのダーラムホールスタッドに繋養されたドバイミレニアムが種牡馬として種牡馬としてのスタートした年、一頭につき１０万ポンドまで高騰した種付け料はにもかかわらず、アメリカからの依頼は引きもきらなかった。今回の死去は、シーク・モハメド殿下の元で働く関係者にとって、呪いでもかかっているのかと呆然とさせるような出来事にちがいない。
殿下による買収以降のダーラムホールは、ダンシングブレーブのマリー病、Ajdal の早死に、Arazi、Reference Point、Shareef Dancerの種牡馬としての不成功など、次々に不運に見舞われている。 ドバイミレニアムの突然死は、そんな状況の英国のサラブレッド業界を景気付ける新種牡馬として大歓迎されていたさなかの今回の出来事だった。
あまりの不運に、こんな突拍子もない考えすら浮かんでくる。競馬界の伝説では、名前を変えることは悪運を招くとされている。 二千ギニー勝馬King's Bestは、名前からアポストロフィーと取った直後に骨折で引退へと追い込まれた。
キングスベストは骨折を克服して種牡馬として活躍している。しかし、ヤゼ−ルから名前を変えたドバイミレニアムは、骨折からは生き残ったが、今回の疝痛は克服することができなかった。この迷信をあなたが信じるかどうかはともかく、ドバイミレニアムが歴史に残る名馬の一頭だったことは間違いない。

THE image of Dubai Millennium always promised to outlast him, and so it has proved with his untimely death on Sunday night. Eyes ablaze and limbs pumping like pistons, his neck would strain for a freedom found in extravagant triumph.
His essence was as pure as his bay coat, unblemished b flecks of white. A child prodigy from the start, campaigned on two surfaces over two continents and named for a nation he was as near a mythological creature as could be entertained. He brought to bear more of Sheikh Mohammed's fantasies than was reasonable to expect.
"You can see his heart through his eyes," Sheikh Mohammed said of Dubai Millennium 13 months ago. Nothing, it seemed, was beyond this remarkable athlete.
So there is something uncomfortably salient in how he came to pass. For all his Herculean deeds, he died in an act least threatening to his mortality. In a clump of grass he contracted a strain of grass sickness that would consume him from within.
In the Sheikh's eye today will rest the reflection of a heavy heart, for he loved this horse like no other. And with good reason : he was a homebred who grew into a stunningly proportioned animal, one who defined himself so memorably in the 2000 Dubai World Cup. It was s a home coming the Sheikh had prepared for more than a year.
That race is forever etched into the minds of all who saw it. So headstrong was Dubai Millennium that Frankie Dietary seemed impotent against the waves of Dubai Millennium's energy. It seemed inconceivable he would have sufficient reserves to resist the world's best in the final drive, yet he bounded away at the very moment you thought he would subside.
He reverted to turf for the Prince of Wale's Stakes, astonishing Royal Ascot with another imperial display of front-running, in the process reducing the Age Khan's classic winner, Sender, to a fading blip on his radar.
He was poised to unify as champion the dirt and turf divisions - a feat never previously attempted, never mind within reach, as it was for him until he fractured his off-hind leg in August last year.
Only a pedant could quibble with the assessment that Dubai Millennium was sublimely gifted. Connections insisted that his leg injury was all that stood between their horse and victory over the Americans at the Breeder's Cup, an outcome that would have propelled him to heights previously unscaled by a modern thoroughbred.
The cream of American breeders were inclined to agree - even at a notional GDP100,000 a time. They flocked to patronise Dubai Millennium in his first year as a stallion based at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket. The horse's passing will have stunned the Sheikh's personnel at Dalham Hall against which the fates appear to hold some sort of curse.
Since its purchase by the Sheikh, Dalham Hall has seen Dancing Brave contract the rare Maries Disease, the premature death of Ajdal and the poor stallion performance of Arazi, Reference Point and Shareef Dancer. Now Dubai Millennium has fallen at a time when his retirement to stud in Britain was celebrated as a huge boost to the domestic industry.
There is one lasting thought, albeit a provocative one. Racing legend dictates that it is inviting bad luck to change a horse's name. This happened, for a matter of days, with the 2,000 Guineas winner King's Best : the apostrophe was removed before its reinstatement on the owner learning of the implication.
King's Best survived a limb fracture and is now thriving at stud. Dubai Millennium, who's name was changed from Yaazer, survived a limb fracture but not his bout of grass sickness. Whatever your inclination on this one, there is no doubt that Dubai Millennium was one of a kind.
