センセーショナル ガリレオでマイケル・キネーン騎手がバドワイザー・アイリッシュ・ダービー初制覇。昨日のカラ競馬場で堂々の四馬身差での勝利を決めた。
２．７５倍の一番人気に押されたガリレオは、華やかな若駒の群れから圧倒的な強さを見せつけて抜け出した。、イタリアダービー馬とエプソムダービー２着馬のゴランを最後の２ハロンで突き放し、英愛ダービーのダブル制覇を果たした。
サドラーズウェルズ産駒のガリレオは、去年の勝者シンダーのタイムより７秒縮めてカラ競馬場の広い空の下を駆け抜けた。
道中インコースを進んだガリレオは、直線に入ると早々に進撃を開始した。
数ストライドでトップギアにはいると簡単に他馬をつきはなし、カラ競馬場に詰めかけた30,092人の観客は喜びに湧いた。
レース後、エイダン・オブライエン調教師は、例によって控えめな言い方で、ガリレオを「すごく特別な馬」と表現した。
「マイケルがずっといい位置につけてくれたので、道中を楽に回れた。ゴーサインを出した後は本当によく伸びてくれた」
「キングジョージを含めて、あらゆる選択肢がありえる。マイルから１マイル半ならどこへ行っても大丈夫だろう。ただ、この馬はブリーダーズカップをずっと目標にしてきている。今後の日程はじっくり考えたい」
「キングジョージに行くか、すこし休ませてアイリッシュチャンピオンステークスを経てベルモントパークへ遠征かだね」
オブライエン師は1997年のデザートキングと併せて二度目のアイルランドダービー制覇。
今期のオブライエン陣営は、これで６つ目のＧ１制覇と大活躍。イマジンとブラックミノルシュはコーラル・エクリプスステークスへ出走する予定。
しかし、シアトリカル、キングスシアター、Definite Articleでの惜しい敗退を経て、ついにアイルランド競馬界の最高の栄誉を得たキネーン騎手(42)にとっては今日は特別な日となった。
ウィナーズサークルに戻ってきて観衆に向けた笑顔は、その喜びをはっきりと物語っていた。
表彰式後のコメントでは「ついにダービーを取れてうれしい。ずいぶん長く待たされたからね」と語った。
「もう少しだと思っていると、実際に達成するのが難しい場合があるし、こう何年も待たされると、気持ちの上で本当に大きなものになってしまうものだ。でも、ついに勝てて本当にうれしい。」
「ガリレオは大好きだ。彼は物事を単純にしてくれる。それは偉大な馬のしるしさ。だから、今日の勝利は信じていたよ」
「馬込みをさばくのがとても上手な馬なので、乗っていて楽だ。まるで、他の馬をなぎ倒すみたいな感じで難なく抜け出せる。それだけ存在感があるんだ」
「道中は楽に走っていた。そして、エプソムと同じように、ペースを速めるように頼んだら飛び出した」
「前の馬に当たってちょっとだけ引いた。全体のペースが上がりはじめたのが分かったから、他の馬を見たんだ。でも、その後は本当によく伸びたね。稲妻みたいだ」
「今回のレースには逃げ馬が二頭いたが、逃げられなくて、早い流れになったのが良かった」
「１０ハロンに短縮するのは何の問題もない。次のレースが楽しみだ。ガリレオのためならいつでもどこにでも行くよ。」
ガリレオは現代のもっとも偉大なダービー馬の一頭であることは間違いない。この圧倒的な勝利で、馬主のJohn and Sue Magnier夫妻とMichael Tabor 氏の喜んだのはもちろんだ。
Magnier氏は「ガリレオには無限の可能性がある」と語り、Tabor氏は「素晴らしいレースだった。帰ってからビデオを見るのが楽しみだ」と言った。
ガリレオの勝利で、他の持ち馬の影が薄くなるかという質問に対して、Tabor氏は「すべてのダービーは特別だ。ケンタッキー、エプソム、アイルランド・・でも、ガリレオは凄い馬だ。ブリダーズカップクラシックが目標なのは変わりないが、その前にレースをいくつか使うつもりだ」と語った。
9万アイルランドポンドの追加登録金を払ってアイルランドダービーに出走したモルシュディのMichael Jarvis調教師とPhilip Robinson騎手は、二着になった喜びを表し、ガリレオが強すぎたと語った。

SENSATIONAL Galileo gave Michael Kinane his first Budweiser Irish Derby success with a superb four lengths victory at the Curragh yesterday.
The 4/11 favourite joined the illustrious band of colts who have completed the Epson-Curragh Derby double with an imperious display, storming clear in the last tow furlongs to slam Italian Derby winner Morshdi and Epsom runner-up Golan.
The sky's limit for this son of Sadler's Wells who completed the Derby journey seven seconds faster than last year's winner Sinddar.
Having tracked the leaders on the inside, Galileo was produced to challenge early in the straight.
And, after taking a few strides to hit top gear, he simply sprinted clear, to the delight of the huge crowd(30,092) which thronged the Curragh enclosures.
Trainer Aidan O'Brien, in typically under-stated post-race comments, described Galileo as "a very special horse"
O'Brien added, "Michael had him in a great position all the way. The horse was just lobbing along and, when Michael asked him to pick up, he really lengthened."
"All options are open to him, including the 'King George'. You could go anywhere with him, from a mile to a mile and a half. But the Breeders Cup Classic has always been the long-term aim for him. We'll have to sit down and discuss it."

"he could go to the 'King George' or we could give him a break and bring him back for the Irish Champion Stakes on the way to Belmont Park."
O'Brien was recording his second success in this great race, having triumphed with Desert King in 1997.
Remarkably, Galileo was giving O'Brien his sixth Group 1 win of the season following the exploits of this colt. Imagine and Black Minnaloush, which will be supplemented to next Saturday's Coral Eclipse Stakes.
But it was a special day for Kinane(42), landing Irish racing's greatest prize at the following near misses on Theatrical, Kings' Theatre and Definite Article.
And he certainly enjoyed the moment, beaming to the crowds as he returned to the winner's enclosure.
He later exclaimed, "It's nice to get it over and done with. I was a long time waiting for this."
"When something is so close to you, it's often hard to achieve. And when people built it up so much, it seems to become bigger than it really is. But it's a great feeling to have won it after so many years."
Kinane added, " I love this horse. H makes everything so simple. And that's the sign of a great horse. The outcome was never in doubt."
"He carries you so easily and takes you through the gaps without any effort. It's almost as if he brushes other horses aside. He has such presence."
" he was just lobbing along and, like Epsom, he took off when I asked him to quicken."
" He ducked slightly when he hit the front because he had seen the bands going to the start and saw them again. But he really stretched. He was electric."
"We had two pace-makers in the race but they couldn't get to the front. There was plenty of pace. And that's the key to this horse."
"dropping back to ten furlongs will be no problem to him and I can't wait to ride him again., whenever or wherever it is."
Galileo undoubtedly crowned himself one of the great modern Derby-winners and his owners John and Sue Magnier and Michael Tabor were understandably delighted by his impressive display.

Magnier confirmed that. "All options are open to him" while Tabor admitted, " It looked a special performance but I'm looking forward to watching the tape and savouring it."
When quizzed about whether the thrill of this triumph surpassed previous wins, Tabor explained, "All Derby wins are special. Kentucky, Epsom and Irish. But this is a very exciting horse. The Breeders Cup Classic has always been the aim, but there are other places to go before then."
Runner-up Morshdi justified his 90,000 Irish Pounds supplementary entry fee by running the race of his life. Both trained Michael Jarvis and jockey Philip Robinson expressed their delight, admitting that their representative was beaten by an exceptional colt on the day.
